We were thinking how we could help our neighbourhood and especially our people in vulnerable groups to come through this epidemic. We’ve adapted an idea that started in Cornwall and has spread as far as Australia.
If every resident in our area gave contact details to four (or more) immediate neighbours, we would create a network that could help those self-isolating – be they single people, pensioners, families – basically anyone who might need help. Of course, there will need to be some limits in order to keep everybody safe. We think that the most useful might be doing some shopping, but people could volunteer to be a voice at the end of the phone for people who are alone – two weeks or more – with only your own company might be a strain – as could two weeks with only the family for company! But do remember to keep safe. If you volunteer to do shopping, leave it at the door. The money and shopping list should be posted through your door or left outside for you to pick up – avoiding theft by organising timings! Avoid physical contact – keep 2 metres distance. We’ve suggested also that you don’t put your full postal address with your other details. If you can’t help, because you too are self-isolating or ill – you may be able to pass them on to one of your contacts who can. We’ve also heard of another idea which is tying a scarf or tie to your door handle if you can't go out but need help. Please look out for these in your area. And you may need to pay by cash so it would be useful if you could make sure you have enough to tide you over. We’ve produced a template that you could use to post through your neighbours’ doors – or hand to them personally while we have no local cases. _________________________________________________________________ If you need help in the coming epidemic, I may be able to help: Name (either first name only or full name) Not your full postal address – just the road you live in Phone number – This is important as many older people do not have access to the internet Email address – optional but helpful I can do shopping I can be at the end of a phone I can post your mail I can collect prescriptions

Starting on 4th November, there will be a six-week survey to canvas public views on Cambridgeshire and Peterborough bus services and how they can be improved.
The public will have the opportunity to feedback on the current bus network, what they think is working and what could be improved through a series of focus groups and a survey that can be completed online or by phone. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority would like to hear your views on how bus services could be improved, to support us to live learn and work in our area. Whether you are a regular bus user, or not, they would love to hear your thoughts to create a vision for transport services in 2030. Everyone who completes a survey will have the chance to opt-in to a prize draw to win £100 of high street shopping vouchers. Click here to start the on-line survey. If you would prefer complete the survey over the phone, please call them on 07377 001512. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority are also conducting on-street surveys which started on Friday 1st November 2019. You can now download the newsletter for October 2019. The next event will be Halloween, with games and and activities at the corner of St Thomas’s Square nearest to Walpole Rd. At 6 pm there will be a judging of the best costumes with prizes. Do come along and join in! There is a provisional list of events we wish to hold next year, as usual all ideas are welcome. We have an update on the community library and buses as well as information on how to help hedgehogs, and to apply for a tree. There is a residents survey in Coleridge ward funded by the city council. The survey – Love it! Hate it! Shape it? Intends to find out what people like and dislike about the Coleridge area, what we would like to see happen in the area and encourage us to become active participants in making something new happen.
They also have a specific youth survey to try to capture the thoughts and ideas of young people. The survey will last until the end of October and will be followed up with a community meeting where people will be able to find out the results and to suggest ideas and get involved. The meeting will most likely be in the early New Year to catch some of those New Year resolutions. Paper copies of the survey have already been posted through some people’s doors and can also be picked up at Perne Road Co-Op, Balzanos and The Cambridge Junction, where completed survey forms can also be dropped off. Just as we're coming to the end of the Mill Road bridge closure we now face having to contend with Queen Edith's Way being closed as the roundabout is redone.
This means that the number 2 bus will not be going to Addenbrooke's from 9th September for 29 weeks. If you need to go to Addenbrooke's you will need to change on Cherry Hinton Road, at the Derwent Road stop, to a number 1 bus. To return, you'll need to take the number 2 to Cherry Hinton and then switch to the number 2 in Queen Edith's Way at the Strangeways stop. The information provided by Stagecoach does not yet show the timetable. We will post it here when it becomes available. The image below shows the route of the number 2 as it goes anticlockwise down Wulfstan Way, Queen Edith's, Cherry Hinton Road and back to Walpole Road and the three stops in the loop. Highlights: The coach trip to Norwich is now bookable. Don't miss out, we had a great day last year and this year we have funding for some free places. Update 26 June: there will be no side bridge built for pedestrians and cyclists. Instead, the bridge will be demolished in a way that allows for a path to remain. However, this will be closed completely (from 8.45am to 8.45pm) on Friday July 5 to Monday July 8, Thursday July 11 to Saturday July 13, Sunday July 28 to Wednesday July 31 and Saturday August 3 until Monday August 5.
______ Edit 4 June 2019: Stagecoach have announced the timetable for the disrupted period from 1st July. This will be supplemented by free Dial-a-Ride services for those in need. _______ Further to our post from 7 May (Mill Road bridge closures July/August 2019), the Cambridge Area Bus Users group have provided an update. They report that Stagecoach will be bringing in three 15 seater buses, one for each side of the bridge and a spare for breakdowns. They plan to run every twenty minutes, one from the city centre to the bridge and one from the bridge to Sainsbury's. The day with the skips and the rubbish collecting – plus things to do in St Thomas’s Hall Skips will be in Ancaster Way all morning. Please take your items there on foot or by car. Need large or heavy items removed from your home? Make a booking. This is vital! Last date for booking is 10th June. We will need: your name and address, what the item is and where it is. Either email birdwoodara@gmail.com or leave a note at 52 Birdwood Rd. If the item is inside your house you will need to be home as we cannot guarantee timings of collections. Please bag any dirty items. No Fly Tipping! If your item is not collected (ie you haven’t made a booking) and it is outside your home after the clear-up has finished, the City Council may see this as fly-tipping! So please do ensure that all your items on the pavement have gone by 1pm. Volunteers needed! Can you make a cake or serve teas? Or are you strong – even just a bit? If you can help please email birdwoodara@gmail.com or leave a note at 52 Birdwood Rd. We couldn’t do this without Cambridge City Council and volunteers from the Cambridge Community Church who we will be working with throughout the morning. There is always room for more help though.

We need to amend our Constitution to include what will happen to any money if we cease activity. We’re not expecting to! The committee thinks any remaining money should be shared equally between the charities we have supported in the past. More details at the AGM. The newsletter for May 2019 is now available to download.
In it you will find information on the Community Action Day on 15th June (see the next post for more information). Also, the coach trip now has a date and destination. We're going back to Norwich again - it proved a good option. Save the date: 21st September 2019. Other items included in the newsletter:
