1950's:
Remember a field in Walpole Rd with horses – where the 'Police houses' were built. Other end were nissen huts where Polish prisoners were. There was a passageway connecting St Thomas's Sq with Walpole Rd – which was a dead end. We used to use Walpole Rd as a roller skating rink. Next to Coe's orchard lived Mrs Clark who also had an orchard and used to let us children help ourselves to apples and pears and hide there when playing hide and seek.

My husband lived in the property from when it was built in 1948. I moved in in April and in November there was 95mm ? rain within 24 hours. As the drains were blocked, the water by the Sunday mid-day was lapping over the door sills and seeping into the house. 10 inches of water inside the property. It took days for the water to go down and then at least six months to dry out. Carpets, furniture and white goods in the kitchen had to be replaced. Electricity had to be turned off initially as water was submerging the electric sockets. Luckily we were insured. It was a £6,000 ? insurance claim. Our poor cat had to live upstairs for weeks. We also camped upstairs. Some of our elderly neighbours had to be put in local bed and breakfasts. St Bede's school hall was opened up on that Sunday for warmth, cups of tea and food.

No memories even after 15 years except a second-hand one.
A. C. Benson, (writer and later Master of Magdalene) was a keen cyclist and walker. He once walked to Cherry Hinton with his friend M. R. James (Provost of Kings) via the Tinns. It then had fences either side of 7 ft corrugated iron with spikes on top. He called it 'like a fence in Hell.' One side still had a corrugated fence (minus spikes) until about 1988.
